We ended up in the pick-up area of a local school just as it was getting in for the day. Picture the two of us on this thing, elbow to elbow (Nicole's legs were brushing up against other scooters as we moved)with hundreds of fellow motorists. Many of them were looking at us and laughing as Joe tried to negotiate the tight quarters. We couldn't even drive the scooter, Joe just had to put his feet down on either side and scoot us along. To make matters worse it was already 35 degrees out (seriously) and we were wet with perspiration. In Joe's eagerness to escape he hit a woman on a motor bike in front of us and acted like nothing had happened. Next he smashed his handlebar into the mirror of a parked scooter knocking it off. Again he road on.
After filling up we headed to visit the royal tombs of Vietnams emperors. Beautiful gardens, and lotus ponds as well as ornate pagodas and shrines. Fantastic architecture and all very serene.
The heat becomes quite oppressive around midday and we are still suffering from yesterdays burns. Today maxed out at 46 degrees celcius, with the weather network telling us "it should feel like 55". Nice. Nothing that several fruit smoothies and a few rounds of banana pancakes can't fix.
We ran into a teacher from Toronto who we met in Hanoi several days ago and are going out to dinner with him tonight. Apparently he knows a place. Last night in Hue and then off to Hoi An by bus tomorrow.
Bye for now
Joe and Nicole
